Never underestimate the power of a good hot chocolate.

Maybe you prefer chocolate only in your desserts, maybe on special occasions, maybe after every meal or if you are like me, then a good hot chocolate is oh soo good at any time from morning to evening.

So here a 3 hot chocolate recipes that will give your taste buds a party because deep down the thought of drinking a good one makes you smile.

If you’re a chocolate in the morning kind of person then this one’s for you…

1. Chocolate Oat Smoothie

(original recipe here)

  • 1 cup milk (your milk of choice)
  • 1/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1 frozen banana (or add a few pieces of ice if banana isn’t frozen)
  • 2 tbsp of nut butter ( my favorites are hazelnut or almond, but you can use any other)
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp flaxseeds
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • pinch of cinnamon
  • Put all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Drink up, this one is meant to be cold.
  • If texture is too thick, simply add a splash of milk.

I have to give the credits for this recipe to a fellow Canadian food blogger Laura from The First Mess. This one is simply perfect, not too sweet and very breakfast-like ready to go. Since I have been doing a sugar detox, I was able to have this one which my son absolutely loves as much as I do. I also heard… that it might help some of you poop too….a little much, well that must be the flaxseed in the smoothie.

If you need a little energy boost to get you through the day then this one’s for you ….

2. Spiced Maca Hot Chocolate

winter drink, hot chocolate, chocolate recipes, valentines day, chocolate smoothie, healthy chocolate recipes
The spiced maca hot chocolate is the first one on the bottom left corner.
  • 1 cup milk (your milk of choice)
  • 1 tbsp (about 5 squares) melted dark chocolate (add 1 tbsp water and microwave 20sec.)
  • 1 tsp maca powder
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup coffee (optional)
  • pinch of cayenne
  • Heat the chocolate in the microwave 20 seconds with 1 tbsp of water. Mix well. Put all the ingredients together and blend well. Then heat your cup in the microwave and enjoy!

While most hot chocolate recipes use cocoa powder and then add a form of sweetener in the recipe, I find the taste of melted chocolate is much better…cue the movie “Chocolat” with Juliette Binoche and her cup of melted chocolate. Yum! that’s what I call the real deal.

Midday oftens requires a boost of energy and while I love to try new things, food is definitely one of my favorite things to talk about and of course to experiment with new recipes. I have heard so much about maca powder and it’s benefits such as increased libido, boosting energy, memory and fertility among others. Since I get incredibly affected by the lack of sunshine here, especially in winter, I am always trying new ways to improve my mood and my energy levels.

If you love to finish a meal with something just a little sweet then this one’s for you…

3. Soothing Hot Chocolate

Soothing Hot chocolate is at the top right.
  • 2 cups of milk (your milk of choice)
  • 1 tbsp of hemps seeds
  • 1 tbsp of melted dark chocolate ( add 1 tbsp water and microwave 20 sec.)
  • 1 tsp of ashwagandha root powder
  • a pinch of fresh grated ginger and turmeric (optional but even better!)
  • Blend together, pour in a cup (then you’ll have another cup worth of hot chocolate ready once you finish) and warm up in the microwave.

After a good meal and at the end of the day, I usually enjoy capping it off with something sweet. I don’t care about calories but since most people do, this one is just perfect to satisfy any craving you might have for something sweet. Don’t skip on the hemp seeds since it makes the hot chocolate frothy and creamier. The ashwagandha is known for promoting sleep as well as fresh ginger. Turmeric is anti-inflammatory so all in all, this one isn’t only a great dessert replacement and craving inhibitor but also soothing for your body.

Enjoy…

Color your style, color your food, color your life!
