EPISODE 39 – The ONE thing you should be teaching your child with Dr. Jody Carrington

If You Like It, Share It With Friends!

Today’s guest came highly recommended by many many moms. If you haven’t heard about her yet then you’re in for a treat because she is not only funny, incredibly honest and transparent about her life but also has the experience to back up what she’s sharing with you today about motherhood, raising kids these days and some things that you should definitely be teaching and doing with your kids, your partner and your students to be well together.

The heart of the matter is that you have one job when you have a kid or teach a kid and that’s to teach them emotional regulation.

Dr. Jody Carrington

You’ll learn her story in this episode but here’s the 101 for you readers….

She’s a clinical psychologist, mother of 3 (including a set of twins), wife to a cow farmer in Alberta, Canada, has her own Practice with a team of highly skilled therapists specialized in relationship-focussed and trauma-informed and regularly speaks nationally to support kids, parents, teachers, educators and first responders. Ohhh and she also has a bestselling Canadian book called ‘Kids These Days’ (see link in ressources below) which we dived in a bit in this episode.

Transitioning Into Motherhood

How do you become a mom when you’ve never been one?….well, Dr. Jody shares her story and it will crack you up. Being a mom doesn’t have to be serious stuff, well not all the time, even if you’ve got no clue what to do or if your even doing this whole mom thing right, this conversation might just be the ‘me too’ that you were feeling all along!

Trust me on this, knowing that a child psychologist also struggled with her baby secretly makes me feel like…okay, I can do this mom thing imperfectly because even the experts don’t always have their crap together like we might think.

Giving Yourself Permission

Some parts of being a mom are fun and simple and relaxing……okay okay okay, I also thought this was funny typing it….especially during the early years, and tweens and teenager years (not there yet but heard great things!) well one mom told me that every phase you go through is new with your first child…

Dr. Jody will tell you straight up that when you feel less than as a mom or looking yourself in another room to escape your kids is…well…actually quite normal. She shares a surprising stat and what you’re actually doing to yourself when you take those stressful mom moments to get yourself back on track and to calm down ALONE.

If you’re not teaching your child this…you will all suffer now or later

Okay, it’s a bit dramatic but having a child and later on an adult child that looses his temper and can’t control his emotions is pretty bad…for everyone around them as well. I’m sure you’ve met one or two kids or older kids which their faces just pop in your mind.

Dr. Jody will guide you as to how you can do exactly that from the get-go with your own kids starting when they are newborns and continuing in walking along with them until they learn how to do it themselves. This might seem obvious but it’s harder and as mamas we often are a little too quick to let go of their hands (figuratively speaking) and this is why you still find some kids these days with challenging emotions that they can’t seem to manage on their own….even if their age would suggest otherwise.

So without giving it all away…make sure to listen to this conversation that’s all about how to be a good enough mom these days, keep connecting with people around you even in COVID times and also raise kids that can learn to keep their lids on….eventually without us to supervise them.
